In the macrostructure of the First Gospel, Matthew 3–4 serves as the hinge between the genealogy-anchored infancy narrative (Matt. 1–2) and the first major discourse on the mountain (Matt. 5–7). Matthew 1–2 establishes legal, royal, and prophetic credentials: Jesus is “son of David, son of Abraham” (Matt. 1:1) and Immanuel, “God with us” (Matt. 1:23). Matthew 3–4 shifts the story from private genesis to public activation (Bates, 2026a, 2026b; Davies & Allison, 1988; Luz, 2007).
