ARTICLE GUIDE
At a Glance
This study tests Qurʾānic Word-and-Spirit titles for Jesus against classical Islamic interpretation and the biblical identity of the incarnate Logos.
What This Study Explores
The article examines rūḥun minhu and Kalimatuhū in Qurʾān 4:171, related language in 58:22, the created-Qurʾān controversy, Johannine Logos Christology, and the promise-plan that leads from creation and Israel’s Scriptures to incarnation.
How Should Christians Use Qurʾānic Christological Titles?
They should use them as questions internal to Islamic discourse rather than as concealed Christian creeds. The titles create conceptual pressure because Jesus is uniquely designated God’s Word and a spirit from Him, but the Christian confession of His eternal identity rests on the canonical witness to the Word who was with God, was God, and became flesh.
Key Claims
- The titles create a bridge, not a complete doctrine. Their force is apologetic and comparative rather than self-sufficient.
- Classical tafsīr offers coherent created-agent readings. Fair engagement must represent those interpretations accurately.
- Islamic divine-speech debates reveal a structural analogy. The Miḥna shows the difficulty of relating eternal speech to temporal expression.
- John’s Logos is rooted in Israel’s story. Creation, Wisdom, Word, temple, and divine-identity motifs converge in Jesus.
- Incarnation surpasses inlibration. Christian revelation culminates in God’s personal self-giving rather than only in a deposited text.
Interpretive Context
The article avoids both polemical overstatement and theological minimalism. Similar words across traditions do not guarantee identical ontologies; responsible comparison moves from lexical overlap to each tradition’s larger account of God, revelation, and redemption.
