What This Study Explores
Torah and the Believer • New Covenant
What role does Torah play in New Covenant discipleship and the coming kingdom?
Torah is covenantal instruction given to a people already redeemed, not a ladder by which sinners earn justification. In the new covenant, the Spirit writes God’s instruction on the heart and empowers the embodied holiness that the external command could describe but fallen flesh could not produce.
Jesus brings Torah to its intended depth and messianic goal rather than founding a law-free religion. Specific practices must be discerned through fulfillment, apostolic teaching, and Gentile inclusion, but the canon’s ethical grain remains formative for life in the coming earth-centered kingdom.
Key Claims
- Torah, from yarah, signifies instruction and direction more broadly than modern statutory law.
- John 18:36 describes the kingdom’s heavenly source, not an immaterial destination.
- Matthew’s anomia warns against covenant-breaking allegiance hidden beneath religious claims.
- In Matthew 5:17, plēroō includes faithful enactment, prophetic realization, and eschatological filling rather than simple repeal.
- Sabbath, food, and festival rhythms may serve as non-salvific formation but cannot become conditions of justification or fellowship.
Interpretive Context
The essay resists both legalism and antinomianism. Grace removes condemnation and precedes vocation, while Spirit-empowered obedience is the fruit of union with Messiah rather than payment for acceptance.
Romans 11 and Ephesians 2 preserve one people without erasing Jewish identity or requiring Gentile proselytism. Present holiness rehearses the future in which instruction goes forth from Zion and the redeemed reign upon a renewed earth.
