Few questions in contemporary biblical theology press as urgently on pastoral practice as the relation between human identity and cosmic destiny. One influential cultural register, shaped by Enlightenment naturalism, collapses the person into a neurobiological mechanism and measures worth in terms of utility (Farris, 2020). A contrasting piety, formed by post-biblical Hellenistic dualism and by popular nineteenth- and twentieth-century evacuation schemes, bifurcates reality into “good spirit” and “evil matter,” treats the earth as staging for departure, and imagines eternity as a non-material sojourn above the clouds (Wright, 2008; Middleton, 2014).
